Abstract
Accurate fatigue strengths of steel sheets are needed to assess the in-service
fatigue life of automotive metallic components. Mechanical parts or structures
made from steel sheets are generally obtained by stamping and cutting. In fact
mechanical fatigue properties are strongly modified by the machining. Cutting
generates a typical shape edge with tremendous geometrical defects that leads to
a lowering in steel fatigue strength. The aim of the present paper is to investigate
the fatigue properties modifications induced by the mechanical cutting. High
cycle fatigue tests have been performed on nine steel grades specimens (with
