Abstract
This paper studies the fracture surface of spur gears subjected to fatigue loading.
The effect of overloads, metallurgical impurities, post-manufactured surface
irregularities, and surface treatments were analyzed using the scanning electron
microscope (SEM). The SEM images were compared to aspects of theoretical
models in an attempt to outline key factors in designing robust gearing systems
with appreciable fatigue life.
