ABSTRACT
The adaptive multilevel method is an innovative approach of finite element me-
thods to the solution of partial differential equations. A new code, developed at
'Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum fur Informationstechnik' in Berlin as implementation of
this method for two-dimensional parabolic problems has been tested on several
realistic problems of heat transfer in electronics industry.
The new method offers a lot of capabilities for numerical simulation, that could
not easily be provided by conventional methods. Especially in applications with
singularities, multiple scales, complex distributions of materials and moving heat
sources the new method has promising advantages. Furthermore its simple usage
opens the powerful possibilities of the finite element method to the non-expert.
