ABSTRACT
The team at CNMPA has developed a unified approach for the
modelling of all the macroscopic physical phenomena that
take place in the casting of metals. This approach combines
Control Volume (CV) numerical techniques with Finite Element
(FE) mesh structures. It is incorporated in a new three-
dimensional CFD code called PHYSICA [1] and its two-
dimensional variant UIFS [2] and has also been embedded in
the proprietary code ASTEC [3] . It has been applied to a
number of casting problems to predict mould filling,
solidification, thermal stress induced distortion and the
creation of voids. The method is described in this paper,
together with example applications.
