ABSTRACT
The heat transfer during continuous solidification in a continuous casting ma-
chine is the major determinant on product quality with regard to further process-
ing. A sophisticated but efficient and fully coupled thermal and mechanical PC-
model for metal billet casting permits to investigate by process simulation the
conditions to control and to improve product quality. Exemplarily, four aspects
of how to adapt strand cooling conditions are discussed. Finally, some per-
spectives of online use of a mathematical model are given.

Continuous casting processes have become most important for primary shaping
of base materials both for ferrous and nonferrous metal-processing industries.
