Structural Topology Optimization By
Stochastic Algorithms

Abstract
The present paper deals with the topological design of truss structures on the
basis of stochastic algorithms. The recently proposed random cost method is
applied to this problem and its performance is compared with the genetic
algorithm and evolution strategy simulations.
1 Introduction
Few powerful strategies for the search of optima in multimodal problems
exist. Examples are the simulated annealing method [11] and the evolution
strategy (ES) [13, 14] respectively the genetic algorithm (GA) [10]. An-
other one, going under the name of random cost method (RC), was recently
suggested by Berg [6, 7].
In [1] a noncanonical Monte Carlo procedure has been developed and
